The long-lead item decides your programme. Plan procurement backwards.

Most programmes slip on a single long-lead item nobody scheduled early. Procurement should be planned backwards from the install date.
Programmes rarely slip on the work everyone is watching. They slip on the one long-lead item nobody ordered early enough — a specialist joint, an imported board, a custom metalwork run.
The fix is to plan procurement backwards from the install date, not forwards from approval. Identify the longest lead item first and let it set the order of everything else.
When procurement is planned backwards, the long-lead item arrives on time and the rest of the programme has room to move around it.
